  • The Henry Luce Foundation Awards $425,000 to ABSW

    November 30, 2016 ~ Carolyn Matthews

The Henry Luce Foundation of New York has announced the awarding of $425,000 to American Baptist Seminary of the West to create a Public Theology Certificate in partnership with the PICO National Network, a community organizing agency.

Recently, the school received word that our grant proposal for a major 3 year initiative in Public Theology had been given the green light. Under the leadership of Dean LeAnn Flesher, ABSW will partner with PICO to train two cohorts of ministers and lay leaders. Their studies will lead to a Certificate in Public Theology. The program will explore the dimensions of prophetic witness and engage the arts of faith-based organizing as essential practices for pastoral excellence, congregational vitality, and an active public theology. The 5 course 18 month program seeks to develop a new model of leadership for seminarians and practicing pastoral leaders that integrates disciplines and directs their application to current social problems.
