Dr. Nick Carter Appointed Interim President

The Reverend Dr. Nick Carter has been named interim president of the American Baptist Seminary of the West. He succeeds the Reverend Dr. Paul M. Martin who died suddenly on March 23. Dr. Carter will begin his term on May 15, 2016.

Dr. Carter retired from Andover Newton Theological School (ANTS) in 2014 where he had served as President and CEO for ten years. While at ANTS, Dr. Carter developed a new strategic plan, brand position, and led efforts for more than $15 million in campus improvements. Carter’s signature contribution, however, was his pioneering work in interfaith leadership education, which is evident today in Andover Newton’s close collaborative relationship with neighboring Hebrew College and their joint efforts to promote understanding and new initiatives through the Interreligious Center for Public Life, which Carter chairs.  In addition, Carter taught courses in Fund Raising, Strategic Planning, and “Politics & the Pulpit.”

Carter is a popular lecturer and author of many publications.

Before becoming president of ANTS, Dr.Carter was President and CEO of several organizations both for -profit and non- profit. In 2001, Carter founded Wayfinders Consulting Group, a management- consulting firm that worked with religious, educational and other non-profit organizations on issues of leadership, governance, fundraising, communications, and strategic planning.

The Reverend Dr. Nick Carter is an ordained minister within the American Baptist Churches, USA. He received his Master of Divinity from Colgate Rochester Divinity School (NY) and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Colgate University (NY). In addition, Carter has received Doctor of Divinity (Honorary) from Franklin College (IN) and Doctor of Humane Letters (Honorary) from Hebrew College & Rabbinical School (MA).

He is currently the Chair of the Board of the Interreligious Center for Public Life and serves with Ecclesia Ministries- Common Cathedral, and others.

Founded in 1871, the American Baptist Seminary of the West is a charter member of the Graduate Theological Union and is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA.
