CLASS OF '03 CELEBRATES
Twenty-three
graduates received their diplomas in May along with commencement
speaker Dr. Samuel B. McKinney’s inspirational charge “Mandate
for Ministry in Century 21.”
Three students received master of arts degrees and 20 were awarded
master of divinity degrees. The Rev. Douglas L. Siden and the Rev.
Dayle H. Scott received honorary doctorates.
Siden, a 1980 graduate of ABSW, worked for more than 35 years
as regional staff of the American Baptist Churches of the West,
providing leadership in camping and Christian education. He is active
politically in the Bay Area, serving as a director for the East
Bay Regional Park District.
Scott is a 1957 graduate of ABSW. He distinguished himself as
pastor, regional staff with ABCW, and a denominational executive
with Educational Ministries of the ABC. Following retirement from
Educational Ministries, Scott joined the staff of ABSW. He served
in several capacities, including dean of students and instructor
in Christian education. Scott retired (again) in June.
Eight students were honored at commencement with special awards:
Jane De Young, the Claiborne Hill Highest Average for an M.Div.
Student; Debra Mumford, the Jessie Day Drexler Highest Average for
an M.A. Student; Daphne Brown-McClenton and Marquerita Story, the
L. Doward McBain Preaching Prize; Adumesa Ademyi, the J. Alfred
Smith Award for Outstanding Ministry in the Black Church; Patricia
Gardner, the Jessie Day Drexler Award for Pastoral Ministries; Jennifer
Zody Plantenberg, the Jessie Day Drexler Award for Competence in
the Fields of Bible and Theology; and Manuel Magana, the Bratcher
Functional Theology Award.
