SCHOOL REMEMBERS FORMER PROFESSOR

Dr. Leland D. Hine, former professor of Christian history at ABSW, died Jan. 5, 2007. He was 85.

Hine joined the faculty at the seminary’s Covina campus in 1960 after teaching church history at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before entering theological education, he held pastorates in Nebraska and Pennsylvania.

Hine received his A.B. degree from Hastings College, his B.D. and Th.M. degrees from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed post-doctoral work at the University of Chicago.

During his 16 years at ABSW, Hine directed the doctor of ministry program. He was acting dean for a year in 1981-1982. Previously, as dean of extension, he helped the seminary develop a variety of credit and non-credit educational experiences for clergy and laity in the western U.S. He retired in 1986.

A memorial service was held at University Baptist Church in College Park, Md., on Jan. 20, 2007.
