SEMINARY IN THE CITY

Middler Marie McCulley will broaden her educational experience over the next two years by teaching English in China.

International Ministries of American Baptist Churches USA will commission McCulley in June. She heads to Vermont in July for ESL certification training, then on to China in August.

She will serve as an ABC missionary through the Amity Foundation, an independent voluntary organization created by Chinese Christians to promote health, education, and social services.

The California native is looking forward to this experience.

"I've always felt called to international ministries," McCulley says. "I'm hoping this will confirm and clarify my call."

The Rev. Katie Choy-Wong, director of admissions and instructor in ministry, was the chaplain for the American Baptist Women's Ministries of the West Conference in May at Mt. Hermon Conference Center in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Choy-Wong also contributed an article in a forthcoming publication, "Women at the Well," edited by Mary Mild for Judson Press.

Dr. George Cummings, academic dean and professor of theology, preached at the American Baptist Churches of the South annual meeting in April. This summer Cummings will be the graduation speaker for the Center for Urban Theological Study in Philadelphia and a featured preacher at the American Baptist Churches USA Biennial in Providence, R.I.

Dr. Tim Tseng, associate professor of American religious history, taught a Baptist history course this spring at Allen Temple Leadership Institute in Oakland.

Tseng recently completed a chapter titled "Unbinding Their Souls: Chinese Protestant Women in Twentieth-Century America" for the soon-to-be-published "Women and Twentieth-Century Protestantism."

Tseng attended the annual meeting of Christians Supporting Community Organizing in May. He organized the Asian American Baptist Caucus convocation at the ABC-USA Biennial in June.

Dr. J. Alfred Smith, professor of preaching, served on the editorial committee of the newly published "African American Heritage Hymnal," published by GIA Publication of Chicago. The hymnal includes an essay by Smith titled "The Ecumenical Nature of African American Church Music."

Smith recently preached in the chapel of Lincoln University, Lincoln, Penn., where ABSW alumnus Charles Hudson ('93) is chaplain.

Dr. Eldon Ernst, distinguished senior professor of American religious history, published an article titled "The Emergence of California in American Religious Historiography" in the Winter 2001 edition of "Religion and American Culture."
