Pastoral Leaders Consider Conflict
“Wrestling with the Angels: Conflict and Spirituality”
drew 50 leaders to ABSW’s annual Pastoral Leadership Conference
in January.
Speed Leas, senior consultant for The Alban Institute and visiting
professor of congregational leadership at the Pacific School of
Religion, was the keynote speaker at the three-day event, held at
San Damiano Retreat in Danville, Calif.
The conference also included worship, with preaching by the Rev.
Felicia Thomas, a Baptist minister on the staff of Middle Collegiate
Church in New York.
This was the third conference at San Damiano. The Rev. Jim Hopkins,
a 1983 graduate of ABSW and senior pastor of Lakeshore Avenue Baptist
Church in Oakland, has attended all three gatherings and found them
helpful for his ministry. “It's good to be part of the community
of colleagues,” he says.
The 2005 Pastoral Leadership Conference will be held January 10-12,
again at San Damiano. The theme is “Rediscovering Pastoral
Care” and major leadership will be given by Dr. Archie Smith,
professor of pastoral psychology and counseling at Pacific School
of Religion, and Dr. Judy Yates Siker, ABSW assistant professor
of New Testament. For further information, please contact Dr. Nancy
Hall, ABSW director of continuing education, at 510-841-1905, ext.
232, or nhall@absw.edu.
