| Dr. Robert J. Arnott |
Former Berkeley Baptist Divinity School President Dr. Robert J.
Arnott died of cancer on July 28, 2001.
Arnott came to BBDS (forerunner to the American Baptist Seminary
of the West) in 1964 and served as president and professor of Old
Testament until 1967. Previously, he was senior pastor of First
Baptist Church, Los Angeles. During Arnotts tenure at BBDS,
he helped to form the Graduate Theological Union. He left BBDS to
take a position as professor of church management and director of
field education at the Claremont School of Theology.
He is credited with helping to establish church management as
an accepted discipline of study in seminaries throughout the country.
He retired from Claremont in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Rowlett Arnott, daughter Cathy
Carruthers, and son Robert.
