AN INVITATION TO MISSION ABSW’s Pastoral Leadership Conference January 13-15, 2003,
at the San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville, Calif., will explore
worship. The theme is “Both to Serve and Adore — Ministry
and Worship in the 21st Century.” “The purpose of worship,” Hall says, “is found in
those five words: both to serve Hall notes that a prophetic church will include celebration of
God’s glory and God’s gift of Jesus Christ, as well as
a challenge to share God’s love. Worship empowers us for witness, Russell explains. One of the historic
functions of Baptist worship is that it ends in invitation, he says. “We need to recover what that invitation is about. It’s
not just about inviting me to the altar. It might be about reconciling
with my neighbor,” he says. “Contemporary worship that
asks for nothing violates the history of worship, that ends in invitation.”
