SEMINARY IN THE CITY
ABSWs Student Body recently received notes of appreciation
from Friends Theological College in Kaimosi, Kenya for books they
collected and delivered. This was one of several mission projects
the students undertook during the year.
Dr.
George C. Cummings, academic dean and professor of theology, will
be on sabbatical through next July. Cummings will be working on
several publications. He also plans to teach courses at the Baptist
Convention Seminary in South Africa, Myanmar Institute of Theology
in Burma, and the Caribbean Theological Center in Limon, Costa Rica.
Dr. Tim Tseng, associate professor of American religious history
and director of the Asian American Center at ABSW, has been very
busy writing and speaking across the nation. He attended the ABC/USA
General Board Meeting in Green Lake in June, where he was elected
to the ABC General Board as an at-large representative.
In June Tseng also addressed the National Conference of Chinese
Christians in San Francisco on "The Role of Chinese Churches
in Changing Times," based on Hebrews 10:19-25.
Tsengs latest works include Second Generations Chinese
North American Evangelical Use of the Bible in Identity Discourse
(Society of Biblical Literature, 2002), as well as Trans-Pacific
Transpositions: Continuities and Discontinuities in Chinese North
American Protestantism (New York: Routledge, 2002).
Dr.
LeAnn Flesher, associate professor of Old Testament, had two of
her articles on Job and Lamentations published
in the IVP Womens Bible Commentary in October 2001.
Flesher will also serve as acting dean while Dr. Cummings is on
sabbatical. In August she will become part-time staff as pastor
of Latino ministries at First Baptist Church in Alameda, Calif.
Along with Dr. Judy Siker, assistant professor of New Testament,
Flesher will attend the Association of Theological Schools Women
in Leadership Conference in October. In November she will also attend
ATS self-study workshop Character and Assessment of
Learning for Religious Vocation.
The
Rev. Desmond Hoffmeister, director of the Global Prophetic Network
at ABSW, delivered the keynote address, Faith that Makes a
Difference, at the May baccalaureate service at Linfield College
in McMinnville, Ore.
Along with alums Daniel Pryfogle (01) and Marcie Giarrizzo
(98), Hoffmeister led a workshop on Prophetic Entrepreneurship:
When the Church Gets Down to Business at National Ministries
Can You See It? conference in August in Colorado Springs,
Co.
Dr. J. Alfred Smith Sr., professor of preaching, wrote one of the
forewords for An Encyclopedia of African American Christian Heritage
by Marvin A. McMickle (Judson Press, 2002). Smith is also featured
in the collection under Denominational Founders and Leaders.
The
Rev. Katie Choy-Wong, director of admissions and recruitment, will
be installed Sept. 21 as co-pastor with Nelson Hayashida at New
Life Christian Fellowship in Castro Valley, California.
