SEMINARY HEARS "EMERGING VOICES"
ABSW is playing a significant role in worship renewal, thanks to
two grants from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.
One grant funded the March 2004 “Crossings” conference
at the seminary, an event that explored the worship traditions and
practices of Asian American and African American congregations.
Eighty people enjoyed a rich experience of lecture, discussion,
music, and worship.
Now on the strength of that project, Calvin has awarded a second
grant to ABSW for “Emerging Voices,” which brings into
dialogue Native American, Naga, and Asian American worship.
In January, a gathering and consultation was held in Lathrop in
the San Joaquin Valley focusing on Native American Christian worship.
In early February, representatives of the Naga Christian community
met at the seminary for discussion and worship. An Asian American
event is planned for March. And the project’s culminating
event will take place April 9 at First Baptist Church in Alameda.
“This will bring together all the ‘voices’ in
a day of sharing, discussion, and worship,” says project committee
member Dr. Nancy Hall, director of continuing education and associate
professor of ministry.
Dr. Russell Yee, adjunct professor, is the director for both grant
projects. Sandra Lee and Marie Onwubuariri, 2004 graduates, are
playing significant roles in planning “Emerging Voices”
events. Current students Khan Lolly and Thuiya Rumthao are also
providing leadership.
