SEMINARY IN THE CITY
Twelve middler and junior ABSW students traveled to Wisconsin in October for the bi-annual Orientation to ABC Life at Green Lake Conference Center. The students met their peers at other American Baptist-related seminaries and learned about the workings of various denominational agencies and programs.
"I think that the Introduction to ABC Life Conference was an amazing opportunity to not only get some very useful logistical info, but to also meet and talk with American Baptists from across the country," says middler Blake Horridge. "It was particularly helpful for me since it allowed me to see that there are actually other young adults, like myself, who are really thinking seriously about ministry. In fact, a number of us have even been talking with National Ministries about how to get young adults more involved with the denomination!"
The Rev. Michelle Holmes, seminary vice president, accompanied the students to Green Lake. She also traveled to Issaquah, Wash., in October to represent the seminary at the annual meeting of the Evergreen Baptist Association. Later in October, she served on an accreditation team for the Association of Theological Schools.
Dr. Margaret McManus, associate professor of historical and theological studies, was chair and commentator for a panel on "19th Century Spirituality and Religion" for the May annual conference of the Western Association of Women Historians in Pacific Grove, Calif. In October, she attended the national conference of the American Studies Association.
Dr. Nancy Hall, associate professor of contextual education, has been appointed to the editorial advisory board of The Hymn, journal of The Hymn Society. Hall will review manuscripts on congregational song and attend the annual meeting of the advisory board during her three-year appointment.
Dr. J. Alfred Smith Sr., professor of preaching and church ministries, opened the U.S. House of Representatives with prayer as guest chaplain Sept. 6. That same week he offered prayer for the state of the union at the Annual Prayer Breakfast for the 36th Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Smith's legacy as prophet, teacher and pastor of Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland is being honored through the launch of the J. Alfred Smith Prophetic Justice Institute at Palmer Theological Seminary in Wynnewood, Pa. The inaugural institute will be held January 15-19, 2007, with the theme "Speak Until Justice Wakes," the title of Smith's latest book with Judson Press. |
