A Letter from our Interim President, Rev. Dr. Nick Carter.

ABSW family and friends:

Rev. Dr. Nick Carter
Rev. Dr. Nick Carter

As Interim President I want to extend a warm greeting to all of you who care about the American Baptist Seminary of the West and are invested in its future. The circumstances of my coming to Berkeley are challenging, but I have been greatly encouraged by an outpouring of support. Then too, it is hard to miss the abiding commitment to the school’s mission that is alive here. It is an inspiration.

We’ve just completed ABSW’s 140th commencement ceremonies (it took our forbearers 5 years to have their first graduating class!), and it was a glorious occasion. Rev. Dr. Margaret Cowden received an honorary doctorate and delivered a challenging commencement address. I was pleased to present degrees to the MCL, MDiv and DMin students, as well as certificates to the first graduates of our new Latino/a program, Iniciativa Latina. In all, it was a great day for all to see that our important work of preparing a new generation of talented leaders for the church and the world continues as our founders dreamed and prayed it would.

Sustaining that mission is our most basic task. Without your ongoing support we cannot even attempt to accomplish all that we have been called to do. Of particular urgency are your investments during this time of transition. There is a great deal of work to be done in the next 12 months! The Board of Trustees and the faculty will be hard at work charting a new strategic plan and, of course, they will be conducting a search for a new president. I pray that all of you will rally in support and let the school’s leadership know that you are behind them in this critical time. It will come as a wonderful affirmation of where we are today and a clear expression of hope for what lies ahead.

Will you consider making a generous gift in support of ABSW’s mission? Whether it is your first gift, your first in a long time, or another in a long history of giving, the gifts that arrive in the next few months will have enormous impact.

I offer our gratitude for your passion and your partnership in this sacred enterprise.

Nick Carter
President for the Interim
